Those are some typical ways people used foot switchable clean boosts. ![]() Some might high eq differences - a clean boost with a mid hump for example, clean in that it's not generating distortion of its own, but not flat frequency response - so you might use a clean boost with tone shaping to add not only an over all boost but an extra boost at certain frequencies, say to help you cut through the band on lead lines. Ideally a pure clean boost won't be coloring the tone at all. So some people use a boost that way - not to add distortion of it's own but to goose an amp into distortion, then switch back out of it when they want to play cleaner. If your amp is already cranked to the point of distortion or the edge of distortion, boosting in front of the preamp will make the amp more distorted, kind of like turning up the preamp gain on a master volume amp. A clean boost adds gain in front of your preamp stage. ![]()
